Pascal Wehrlein has a lot going on right at the moment – both professionally and privately. On the one hand, the Porsche driver is leading the overall standings in Formula E, and on the other, he became a father a few days ago. Daughter Soleya Wehrlein was born safely on February 17 – one week before the upcoming race in Cape Town, South Africa. After the family’s happiness, the 28-year-old can now fully concentrate on the job again – and continue to reach for the Formula E world championship title. Just under two weeks ago at the race premiere in Hyderabad, he steered his factory Porsche to fourth place and even extended his lead in the standings. And that was after a serious accident in the 1st free practice session, which not only caused him some pain but also missed track time.
Wehrlein had been treated in a hospital until late Friday evening, while his Porsche squad was able to repair the badly damaged car in time to start 2nd practice early Saturday morning. In an initial analysis, Porsche attributed the cause of Wehrlein’s unusual high-speed crash to a malfunction in the control unit.

“I’m fit again,” says Wehrlein ahead of the fifth race of the 2023 season. “Since the race in India, I’ve been to the physio a few times and done a lot for my back. I’m in a situation today where I can say I don’t feel anything anymore. I’m fine again, I’m top recovered and have no after-effects. The issue is over. The important thing was that an MRI scan showed no injuries.”
Wehrlein had confidence in the car again the very next day despite the accident, which was not his fault. “Otherwise I wouldn’t have sat in the car,” said the former DTM champion and Formula 1 driver. “I would have preferred to have made the mistake myself. If I go over the limit and put the car in the wall, then I know that for me. If it’s technical, it’s a bit harder to digest.”
Wehrlein continued, “We had a long talk in the hotel after my hospital visit, where it was explained to me what had happened and what was being done. After that, I was sorted out and the next morning in practice I was the fastest Porsche driver. I just drove as if it hadn’t happened at all.” He could not say anything about the current status of the investigations, “they are ongoing. We were able to narrow it down.”
